DIRECTIONS TO BAILEY'S

The wedding ceremony and reception are all taking place at the same spot, so you should only need these directions to get where you're going! Remember, there are not any grocery stores or gas stations on the mountain, so get your supplies before you get up there. The small general store on the mountain has a few things to offer but visiting a regular grocery before you head up is probably your best bet.

PLEASE NOTE!!! DO NOT RELY ON MAPQUEST OR GPS TO GET YOU THERE. MANY PEOPLE GET LOST THIS WAY. IF YOU MUST USE ELECTRONIC MAPPING, USE GOOGLE MAPS AND ENTER THE FOLLOWING ADDRESS: 33650 Bailey Meadow Road Palomar Mountian California 92060

cell phone reception is pretty lame on the way up and once you get to bailey's. If for some reason you need to contact us on the mountian, you can call the land line at the Bailey house: 760 742 3497. Please dont use this line until after september 23rd. Enjoy the drive- its a beautiful one!

From North County San Diego (encinitas, carlsbad, cardiff, oceanside, etc) via Pala

I-5 north towards Los Angeles
Take Highway 76 EAST (exit 54a)
-----large grocery stores (Ralph's or Von's) can be found about 5 miles in on highway 76 on the right side---------
continue on highway 76 for about 29 miles from grocery stores towards pauma valley and lake henshaw
at about the 29 mile point, note that 76 east veers a bit to the left- make sure you continue to follow it!
in about 5 miles you will see a sign for s-6 towards Palomar Mountain
VEER LEFT onto s-6 towards Palomar Mountian.

(Note that s-6 goes in more than one direction, so if you find yourself at Harrah's you've gone the wrong way)

You should pass Oak Knoll campground on your left as you head up S-6, also called the "south grade road" of Palomar Mountain. After about 7 miles of curves and turns, you'll reach the top. Turn left onto East Grade Road and then make another immediate left towards the state park onto S-7. Mother's Kitchen and the Palomar Mountain General Store will be on your right as you make the turn. Follow S-7 for about 1 mile until you see Bailey Meadow Road on your right and a wooden sign that says "Bailey's". Follow this road for about 1 more mile until you reach the end- the Bailey House will be on the right!

From San Diego City area (via Pala)

Take I-15 north to Highway 76 East towards Pala
note that 76 east veers a bit to the left at the crossroads of rincon springs road and valley center- make sure you continue to follow it!

Other things to know bout

For those staying in the casino, we're going to provide a shuttle on the wedding day, so there's no reason to drink and drive. We tried to get Willie [Nelson] to play at the wedding but he was booked up, however we did get him to play at the Casino on the Sunday night just in case you want to extend your vacation.

September in California is one of the best times to visit. The sea should be warm enough to trunk it, the weather should be a little cooler than in the height of the summer, but still lots of blue skies. The trees on the mountain will be turning to Autumn. Apple harvest and breezes.

You probably won't need a raincoat (though there is always a chance). Its quite likely going to be pretty warm during the day (and suncreen is a must) so dress appropriately - but, you will need something a bit warmer for the evenings as we'll be up high.

Just a note to the ladies: unless you are really adept and practiced at your swagger in your high heeled shoes, keep in mind that Bailey's is a rustic spot, so the terrain in some areas is somewhat uneven and may be better tread by a low wedge or flat heeled shoe.

Accommodation details

Here we will talk about where you all will stay and how much you all will like it.

Obviously we're not exactly sure who's going to be coming at this point in time but we've outlined accommodations in your invites. There are two main variations available if what we suggest doesn't fit the billing. Firstly there is a campsite at the wedding site itself. Its pretty awesome (picnic tables, fire pits and set in amongst tall trees of the resort. Its also the cheapest option available. Campsites are $17 per night, and flush toilets and cool water showers are included with the campsite. Spots are limited though, so let us know if you think this option is best for you.

The second option is the casino. We've stayed there and the room was really nice, though I'm going to warn any vegetarians to stay away from the food (probably true for meat eaters too but you'll at least have some choice). We'll be running a shuttle up and down to the mountain (about 20-25 minutes). Check back for details about the shuttle closer to the date, or we will let you know the particulars.

Further afield there are other options in Julian (really quaint mining town mostly known for apple pie) and Escondido (more centrally located) but these places are around a hour away so much less convenient. We have pretty much absorbed all the cabins on Palomar, but vrbo.com is a great site to find other nearby places that may be available.

For those of you who want to visit the coast and our lovely town of Encinitas before or after the wedding, we are happy to suggest some options for you. Just send us a message:

Getting there!

Okay.

Let's get something straight.

This is a rural location with winding roads and you're probably going to find that most internet maps or GPS devices get a bit confused with the address.

Luckily there are very few roads on the mountain so brush off those pre 2005 direction skills and you'll be fine. City dwellers be warned, these roads don't run in straight lines.... oh and don't go falling off the edge, this is the top of a MOUNTAIN!

Janet is telling me to tone down the bourbon attitude and get to some real information. So here goes.

Firstly you can use google maps, but to get to the Baileys you'll have to use this location: 33650 Bailey Meadow Road, Palomar Mountain, California, 92060 - this is where the map below links to.

For those flying in, the best location to arrive would be San Diego. After that, the John Wayne airport in Orange county to the north, or even LAX can all be worth considering based on flight cost.

The mountain is about 2-3 hours from anywhere. Those are a cool 2-3 hours though as you drive from coastal Southern California into semi-desert and then up to to the cooler pine forest of the mountain. If you kept going onto the other side, another hours drive will have you in the Anza Borrego desert, and you could probably get to the Salton Sea in two hours.

Things to do over the weekend

While we won't have any kind of formal schedule for the weekend other than the ceremony at 1pm on Saturday, we hope everyone gets a chance to meet each other and hang out for more than just the few hours of the wedding itself. Oh, and as far as the wedding day, the ceremony will be followed by cocktails, dinner, and dancing- all at the same location within walking distance of each other.
We will be at Bailey's from Thursday the 23rd until Sunday the 26th, and we hope everyone gets a chance to unwind and enjoy themselves.

We'd love to have a casual BYOB on Friday evening at Bailey's so everyone can catch up and we'll let you know the details when we figure them out!
Check back closer to the date to see if any new plans have turned up, but until then, we look forward to seeing you on Palomar Mountain. It is a beautiful place to hike, listen to birds, and is known for star gazing...  so, we'll see you there.

Baileys

As you will read on their website, Bailey's is a place rich in heritage and history. The main house at Bailey's Palomar Resort was built in 1888 by homesteaders from Kentucky looking for a better life out west. The dance hall was built in 1925 and seems to have held some pretty fun gatherings over the years,  even despite prohibition. The surrounding areas have long held many sacred spots for Native Americans who knew the mountain for its free flowing spring and peaceful vistas. The Bailey property has fern meadows and hundred year old Black Walnut trees. Brad Bailey, who runs the Resort today with his wife and their children, is the great grandson of the original homesteaders, Theodore and Mary Bailey, who came to California in 1884.

Once There

Baileys Palomar Resort is location 5000 feet up Palomar Mountain. Its quiet, unspoilt, and provides a chance to decompress from city life- so a little preparation will help your stay.

We recommend picking up some provisions for the weekend before you come up. Doing this in one of the major cities is advisable - Escondido is the last one you are likely to see on your way up.

There is one restaurant, Mother's Kitchen, and an attached shop with basic provisions.

Remember that at 5000ft alcohol is significantly more potent so watch your drinking and driving even more than usual!

On top of the mountain there are various trails, an indian reservation, and a fresh spring that unfortunately you now pay to use (though I think the resort water is the same). There is also a large observatory that you can take a tour of, or if that is too sedate you could strap yourself to a bike and throw yourself down the side of the mountain (I can assure you going down is easier than up and its a blast!).

Bacci ball, horseshoes, lawn darts, kites and more will be available for your enjoyment too-if you don't happen to have your bike handy.
